Documentary Portrait Series shot in and around Aleppo, Syria in early 2013. The people of Aleppo are still dealing with the effects of the nearly three year old civil war. This series is an example of the type of documentary photography I am capable of in the field, in any conditions. I chose color for this series instead of black and white to show the scene more realistically.
More than simply taking a picture, reportage is about telling a comprehensive story about your subject. Conflict is one of the most extreme situations to do this in. You must be ready to use your skills regardless of what is going on around you and it takes extensive planning and risk mitigation to do it as safely as possible.
Being able to reach the scene of a disaster quickly, gain access, and document the scene and the people is a valuable skill. It takes experience, skill in planning, and technical expertise, in addition to a sensitivity to those you are photographing.
Telling the story of an event or situation requires a photographer who can put themselves in the middle of it. I am skilled and capable of finding the story that your readers can relate to. My real interest is in finding out about and showing the daily lives of people in a wide range of the human condition.
More core competency is documenting the people I encounter. Whether it is a war zone or people in every day life, it is important for me to be able to record what I experience, and to show my viewer a true picture of the person on the other side of the lens.
Environmental portraiture is a way to document people in the world in which you encounter them. From city to country, beach to mountain, it’s an important skill to be able to make the picture wherever it is happening.
A documentary photographer must be versatile, able to cover events from conflicts to concerts, press events to protest, and from sports to celebrities. I am experienced in gaining access to events, locations, and people, and able to get the shot and tell the whole story when it counts.
I have photographed in more than 30 countries around the world. I am well-equipped to travel anywhere on short notice and am very familiar with the planning and logistics it takes to get to a location and capture the whole story in a timely manner. I can do adventure in the most remote locations as well as civilized coverage of centers of culture and commerce.
In terms of travel photography, my greatest joy is being on an adventure. There’s nothing like being there to document the thrill of discovery. It takes skill, experience, and sometimes just cojones to get on location and bring home the story.
